Nottingham conference highlights gaps in mental healthcare
Mental Health Awareness Week begins, with events across Nottingham encouraging people to talk openly about mental health. University of Nottingham is also hosting a conference focused on improving care for underserved communities.

Mental Health Awareness Week kicks off around the country today. It's a campaign that highlights the importance of maintaining good mental health and hopes to get more people talking about their own experiences, overcoming the stigma around it. Aligning with the campaign, University of Nottingham is hosting a conference around the theme of providing better care for underserved communities.
The Mental Health Foundation (MHF) have run this campaign for twenty-five years now, with many organisations taking part in raising awareness and providing help. Last year, NHS Nottingham Healthcare took part by bringing together all of their related resources into one place. (We're waiting to see if they show any recognition this year - in the past the released their statement on the first day of the campaign.)
Society for Academic Primary Care (SAPC) are working with University of Nottingham to host a conference on Wednesday, 13th May on University Park. The university said that certain people are not getting the mental healthcare that they need.
Dr Vibhore Prasad, a senior clinical and practitioner, said: “Historically, funding for medical research has been spent unequally. Much research funding is spent in London and the south east. As a result, research is conducted with affluent white British communities and people from underserved communities have been missed."
This year's theme set by the MHF is "action". They said that whilst awareness is a crucial prelude to action, the taking action to safeguard personal, mental health is often more crucial.
Nottingham Central Library has a number of events to "take time for yourself" throughout the week. Mindful Sketching is being run by Niche Artefact on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Daniel James is running a session on breaking sabotaging thought patterns. There are others too: check the timetable.
