Trent Basin footbridge opens today
The eagerly awaited Lady Bay-Trent Basin bridge will open today, with celebrations to follow at the weekend.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place today to open the new footbridge between Trent Basin and Lady Bay. A community "fun day" will be held on both banks of the bridge on Sunday, 14th July.
The new bridge joins up the northern Portside Street and the southern fields just by Nottingham Rugby FC. It is not too far from Lady Bay Bridge but will be a much more comfortable stroll than going alongside the high-trafficked road. The bridge is also suitable for cycling across, which means traveling down Meadow Lane can be avoided for many journeys by bike.
Access via Poulton Drive is not yet possible, but is still being actively worked on. Latest reports suggest it will be accessible "shortly after" the bridge opens.
The need for the bridge was identified in 2019, with funding secured in 2020. A contractor, Balfour Beatty, was commissioned in 2022 and throughout 2023-24 planning permission was acquired. Design work happened during 2024. In 2025 construction began by Britons Fabricators Ltd in Hucknall.
The bridge will open today at midday. Councillor Linda Woodings, Executive Member for Regional Development, Growth and Transport at Nottingham City Council, said that there will be children from nearby schools from both north- and south-sides to cut the ceremonial ribbon.
