The Spring exhibition at Sherwood Observatory is newly opened for the season, showcasing some items which have been to space and back. The exhibition is curated towards encouraging interest in STEM education. This comes at a time when the UK is seeing large skill shortages across key technology areas.
Since opening the planetarium in 2024, the Observatory and Science Centre has gone from strength to strength. More planetarium shows have been added this year which often sell out quickly. The new exhibition also shows an expansion in their remit, as they are now displaying art from Rudolf Williams, a lifelong NASA fan who has been present at at least eight launches and landings.
Mr Williams has also loaned some of his personal collection to the exhibition, including thermal protection tiles from shuttles Challenger and Atlantis.
A 2025 report issue by Parliament found that there was a shortfall of 173,000 jobs across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) industries in England. These jobs are unfulfilled due to lack of expertise in the country at both the "foundational and professional" level.
Tony Booth, Centre Manager at the Observatory, said, "Our goal is to ignite curiosity and provide a mixture of opportunities for everyone to explore the wonders of space. This exhibition represents an exciting step forward in our commitment to public engagement and STEM education."
In order to access the exhibition space, a ticket for a planetarium show is required. There are shows on most days, aimed at all ranges of ages.
