CJ DeBarra is throwing a party to celebrate launching the second volume of their Queer Nottingham history. This latest book covers the local history for LGBTQ Notts folk between 1991 and 2020.
The first volume covered 1960 to 1990, using almost 200 interviews. Capturing these verbal histories is crucial as so much of it is at risk of being lost. For instance, the Morning Briefing covered the Rainbow Heritage Awards as it was quite difficult to find any reference to past winners. That's no longer true: in the appendix of CJ's latest book is a list of all winners, which may be the only definitive list available.
They will have to add themselves to that section for the next edition of the book: this year CJ was awarded a Rainbow Heritage Award for their work on collecting both the histories and almost 1,600 artefacts of queer, cultural significance that aught not be forgotten.
On that matter, they said this: "Nottingham has so many firsts that should be noted: the first nightclub with a license for LGBT+ people, the first rainbow crossings, and the first openly gay footballer."
The event takes place at Central Library this evening, with an "utterly meaningless quiz", stalls from LGBT+ groups, comedy, and a DJ set. Tickets are essential.
