Scientology stall appears in Sneinton Market
A Scientology outreach stall has appeared in Sneinton Market. The group has previously been refused charitable status on public benefit grounds.
A "Scientology Volunteer Minister" outpost has been set up in Sneinton today. They are the outreach arm of the private limited company which calls itself "Church of Scientology".
Scientology has no permanent base in Nottingham, but does have larger facilities in London, Birmingham, and Manchester. Though only a small presence in the UK, with fewer than 2,000 adherents recorded in the last census.
These outreach events often offer "personality tests" and the promotion of self-improvement courses. Science fiction author, L. Ron Hubbard, writer of fiction, created the idea, in an entertainment magazine, of Dianetics. This is a key part of Scientology and is used as a form of "spiritual counselling".
The company was rejected charity status in 1999, citing a lack of benefit to the public and had no charitable intentions.
