The National Ice Centre is once again running its holiday club to keep children busy during the day as well as public ice sessions every day this week, including today. There's also a three-day intensive ice skating class starting today and a two-day short track camp starting Thursday.

There is no requirement for ice skating experience to attend the holiday club, which is for children aged 7-13. Each day there is at least one hour of skating, with members of the ice team standing by to offer help and keep an eye on safety. Off the ice, there are other sports, arts and crafts, and food to keep them busy. This costs £35 per day, including food, snacks, and skate hire.

The public skate is an open session for anyone of any age and ability. There are penguins available for a bit more stability but with the correct size skates and a bit of patience most people can find bravery enough to detach themselves from the wall in twenty minutes or so. During these hot days the public ice sessions are remarkably quiet, so there's plenty of space to get to grips with balancing and skating at a self-directed pace. Public skating costs £13, including skate hire.

Intensive courses pack a lot of a training into a one-hour slot for three consecutive days. The lessons are guided with a Skate UK coach, the program designed by British Ice Skating. You can join these lessons with any level of experience - including if it's the first time you're putting on skates. The sessions cover all levels, from first to platinum. That's £75.

Ice skating is a sport suitable for most ages, with toddlers and retirees both taking to the ice each day.
