As the Easter holidays continue, now is a good time to go to Nottingham Contemporary. They are hosting a number of free family activity days throughout the week. Afterwards is a good time to take a look around the two exhibitions.

One installation is Cemetery of Martyrs, which has large-scale sculptures turning the gallery into a symbolic graveyard in remembrance of freedom inspiring artists of all kinds across the Middle East. These kinds of installations, especially when stepping into an unfamiliar cultural work, are often better with a guide. At 12:30pm, Gallery Assistant Simon Withers will be giving a talk and walkthrough of the exhibition.

The second exhibit is Lines That World a River, which presents drawings and paintings from coastal communities around Pakistan. There, climate change is evident in rivers drying out and the sea creeping further onto land.

Whilst the symbolism of the exhibitions may not resonate deeply with younger children, there is entertainment for them and parents elsewhere in the galleries: the arts and crafts based activities take inspiration from the waterways of Lines That World a River and the artworks created are added to the flow of other children's works on the wall.

The family activities are on today, tomorrow, and Thursday. There are two slots each day, where children can drop in at any point: 10am and 1pm, running for two hours. Wednesday at 1pm is a special, low-stimulation event designed for children with SEND needs. It’s highly recommend to book before attending, though there may be slots available on the door.
