Special police service presence at boxing match
Piano or violin options at the Royal; police deployed as a safety measure at boxing match.
Fairly blowy weather today, as 30 mph gusts continue all day, but consistently around 12 degrees so not all that cold. The evening will cool off. No rain expected.
The Theatre Royal has two different classical concerts today. Daniel Lebhardt is a pianist who will be playing Beethoven, amongst other composers. This is part of the Sunday Piano Series, designed to be accessible and informal. His programme starts at 11am - time to get lunch in town afterwards. Sinfonia Viva takes the stage at 4pm where two violinists will play pieces including the theme of the Antiques Road Show, or Brandenburg Concerto No 3 as it's known in fancier circles. Tickets for each event are £11 or £5 for under 26 year olds.
In policing news, a special police service was in action last night at the Leigh Wood v. Josh Warrington boxing match.
"There are lots of Forest fans here tonight, and a lot of Leeds fans too," a Motorpoint security guard told the Morning Briefing. "There's a concern about football rivalry." When asked if there had been any incidents where the police were required, he said they were just a preventative measure so far.
In contrast, security during an ice hockey game is handled by internal security teams.
If an event is considered at risk of becoming unsafe an event organiser can request police presence, or they can be compelled to request it by the Council or Safety Advisory Group. It's not clear which happened here. Either way, the organiser is charged "the full economic cost" of the special police service. There should be no cost to the tax payer (except the police are taken from other duties).

Leigh Wood, from Nottingham, won the match decisively.
