There are rumours out of Sherwood Forest this weekend that signs of dragons have been found amongst the trees. Visitors have reported spotting golden eggs hidden in the foliage.
Youngsters, and their grown-ups, are being called to Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre to pick up a handbook to guide them through the Major Oak trail. There are activities to do along the way, and hidden messages to be found throughout. The forest rangers have warned visitors to "keep your eyes peeled for beasts that lurk within".
The Realm of Dragons Easter Trail event started yesterday, and will run over the Easter school holidays, until 12th April. Handbooks to take up the trail are £4.50 each (an increase of £1 from last year). Handing in a completed activity book at the end will earn a reward.
Whilst on your adventure, you can also hire an Explorers pack (£4). It that includes binoculars, a magnifying glass and bug pot, and extra activities.
At 1pm today there is a tour around the forest with the "Sheriff of Nottingham", as he attempts to root out Robin Hood. You'll learn all about Robin, the Major Oak, and many stories of Medieval life. The 1.5 hour tour is £11 for adults and £6 for children.
The Visitor Centre is open from 10am til 4pm outside of school term time, every day. It doesn't cost anything to enter the forest itself, if you wanted to skip the activity book and have a cheaper day out.
The car park is open from 9am til 4pm each day, costing £6 (rising to £7 from 1st April). Parking is free for RSPB members. The Sherwood Arrow bus service stops right outside the Visitor Centre, and costs £6 for an adult (two £3 singles, which is cheaper than a return).
