Clumber Street has a new coffee house open this week, as Black Sheep Coffee open its first of eight branches around Nottingham.

Black Sheep Coffee is a chain with over 100 branches across the UK and expanding quickly. The Clumber Street branch is its flagship franchise in the city. Its co-owners are Luke Underhill and James Pasco, both veterans of the high street commercial space; they also own the Timberland in Victoria Centre.

The chain prefer to use Robusta coffee beans, as opposed to the more easily found Arabica beans used by Starbucks. Pasco told the Nottingham Post, "Robusta is stronger, not so acidic as the Arabica. It's got a tobacco-y softer flavour to it and it's got more caffeine in it."

Robusta beans may set Black Sheep apart from many local coffee shops, but it's not the most esoteric thing on the menu. They also sell a range of add-ons to their coffee: prebiotic fibres can be added to aid digestive health, collagen which they said helps skin, and CBD, extracted from cannabis oils, that one drinker said "takes the edge off the caffeine spike".

Coffee remains a big industry in the city, on both small and large scales. Nearby Cosmos on Stoney Street, which recently changed ownership and has seen some renovations, has many speciality coffees on their menu. Bonincontro opened on Pelham Street just this January. 200 Degrees has a number of branches around Nottingham, and was purchased by Caffé Nero in 2024.
