Members of the Nottingham Society of Artists (NSA) are exhibiting their work this weekend at the society's gallery on Friary Lane.

The NSA has been a place for artists to support each other and hone their craft since 1880.

Over time, it has supported many successful artists, including Dame Laura Knight. Her Self Portrait with Nude (1913) caused controversy for depicting a female artist painting a nude model - something women were largely barred from at the time - but is now held by the National Portrait Gallery.

Today's display showcases work by current members, offering both exhibition space and the opportunity to sell. The prices can be as low as £65 for original works. There's no fixed theme of the exhibition, so there are landscapes, portraits, and abstract pieces on the walls, along with mixed-media pieces with added texture and depth.

In October last year, a study from King's College London and Psychiatry Research Trust found that viewing original artworks can lower stress by around 22%. The figure is closer to 8% for prints or replicas. So, starting your own art collection could have health benefits too.

These members' exhibitions take place around five times a year, with many members appearing multiple times across the year. So, this may be a good opportunity to follow the work of individual artists, and maybe even put together a collection of your own.

The society is a registered charity, funded by members' fees, commissions on art sales during NSA events, and rental of the workshop spaces.

The gallery is free to enter. On Fridays and Saturdays, it is open from 10:30am until 8pm, closing a bit earlier on other days.
